1 Step Closer is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to breaking systemic cycles and building resilient communities one step at a time. We believe that true community transformation happens when we simultaneously anchor vulnerable families in crisis and equip the next generation with the foundational tools they need to thrive.
Through our premier initiative, The Kinship Anchor Project, we provide immediate, wrap-around support to non-parent relative caregivers—such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles—who have suddenly stepped up to raise children due to a parent's incarceration. By offering vital legal navigation, digital connection resources, and material stabilization, we ensure these fragile households remain safe, supported, and intact.
Complementing this structural family support, our Youth Empowerment Initiatives focus directly on the children, preparing them to lead successful, self-sufficient futures. We deliver targeted, trauma-informed programming centered on three core areas:
o Financial Literacy: Teaching youth the essentials of budgeting, saving, and financial independence to build long-term generational wealth.
o Conflict Resolution: Equipping young people with emotional intelligence, de-escalation strategies, and healthy communication skills to navigate life's challenges.
o Leadership Development: Cultivating confidence, critical thinking, and civic engagement to help youth discover their potential as the community leaders of tomorrow.
By stabilizing the home today and empowering the youth for tomorrow, One Step Closer bridges the gap between crisis and opportunity.
1 Step Closer Mission Statement
"1 Step Closer empowers vulnerable youth and anchors families impacted by systemic crises through targeted legal advocacy, digital connection resources, and life-skills education—breaking generational cycles one step at a time."
Our Core Vision
To build a resilient, equitable society where every kinship family is structurally stabilized and every young person is equipped with the leadership and financial tools necessary to achieve self-sufficiency.
The Two Strategic Pillars of Our Mission
To make the mission clear to corporate donors and grant committees, we execute our vision through a dual-action model:
Stabilizing the Present (The Kinship Anchor Project): We provide an immediate administrative, legal, and financial safety net to non-parent relative caregivers (grandparents, aunts, uncles) stepping up to raise children due to parental incarceration.
Empowering the Future (Youth Initiatives): We deliver trauma-informed, forward-looking programming that equips young people with critical life skills, specifically focusing on Financial Literacy, Conflict Resolution, and Leadership Development.
Our Guiding Values
Continuity: Protecting the vital bonds of family and community during unexpected crises.
Empowerment: Moving individuals from temporary survival to long-term self-determination.
Integrity: Operating as a transparent, data-driven 501(c)(3) bridge for corporate and community resources.
Compassion: Delivering judgment-free, confidential support that restores dignity to the entire family unit.
